How to Read Your Zi Wei Dou Shu Chart

The 5 most important elements every beginner should understand · 命盤入門

Reading a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart for the first time can feel overwhelming — dozens of stars across twelve palaces in Chinese characters. Focus on these five elements first, and the board begins to speak clearly.

1. Life Palace Star (命宫主星)

Locate the Life Palace (命宮) — marked as Palace I in most layouts. The major star(s) here define your core nature and life direction. Zi Wei (Purple Emperor) suggests leadership destiny; Tian Tong (Heavenly Unity) favors adaptability and service; Wu Qu (Commander) indicates discipline and financial acumen.

2. Wealth Palace Configuration (財帛宮)

How do you earn and retain money? Stars here describe whether wealth comes through skill, relationships, inheritance, or timing cycles. Look for Four Transformations — Lu (prosperity) in Wealth often marks strong income activation periods.

3. Career Palace Stars (官祿宮)

Your vocational alignment lives here. A strong Career Palace with auspicious stars suggests natural recognition in professional settings. Challenging stars indicate careers requiring extra effort or unconventional paths to success.

4. Four Transformations (四化)

Lu (祿), Quan (權), Ke (科), and Ji (忌) mark prosperity, authority, recognition, and obstruction respectively. They attach to specific stars and activate different themes when triggered by annual fortune or Major Cycle shifts.

5. Major Cycle Timing (大限)

Each ten-year period emphasizes a different palace. Knowing your current Major Cycle tells you which life domain is "lit up" — and which palace reading matters most right now.
